Rare Disease Day – You Are Not Alone
A rare disease is any condition which affects very few individuals in a vast population. Though at present there is no universal definition for it.
World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has suggested that a rare disease should be defined as one with a frequency less than 6.5 – 10 per 10,000 people. But the occurrence and prevalence from country to country varies drastically and there are no definite statistics or parameters to analyze.
A lack of knowledge and awareness often takes several years for any rare disease to get diagnosed. The costs involved in diagnosing and treating some of these rare diseases are very high and beyond the reach of a common man.
